 THUNDERSTORM  is a theatrical play written in 1933 by the Chinese dramatist Cao Yu,  the play is regarded as one of the most important works of modern Chinese theatre.

Our performance is a new version based on the original play, adapted and directed by Terrie Tai, her adaptation makes the character relationships and plot more understandable and resonant for modern audiences, hope you enjoy it.

《雷雨》是中國戲劇家曹禺於1933年創作的一部話劇，被認為是中國現代戲劇最重要的作品之一。我們今天的演出，是根據原著改編的新版本，由戴莉改編執導，她的改編讓現代觀眾更容易理解和共鳴，希望大家喜歡。

 The subject matter of Thunderstorm is the disastrous effects of rigid traditionalism and hypocrisy on the wealthy, modern, somewhat Westernized Zhou family.

If "Thunderstorm" was a thunderstorm, Zhou Pu Yuan could be the dark sky, he could be the background, he is the living environment of other characters. Fan Yi would be a burning thunderbolt!

Zhou Pu Yuan shows multidimensional features as a commanding father, a shrewd and vicious capitalist, a sentimental but realistic lover, an old man who holds that life is dangerous and looks forward to the safety of old age...

But he was also cruel. He abandoned his first love and made her commit suicide by throwing herself into the river. He also tortured his current young wife, he put her under house arrest upstairs and forcing her to take psychotropic drugs every day.

Finally, on a night of thunderstorms, all the family scandals and secrets of life experience were exposed, and the "ivory tower" of this etiquette came crashing down.

《雷雨》的主題描寫一個貌似開明，慈善，體面的富裕家庭的悲劇。如果《雷雨》是一場雷雨，周朴園就是黑暗的天空，他是其他角色的生存的背景，繁漪則是爆發燃燒的霹靂！

周朴園展現出多維度的角色性格，他是一個威嚴的父親，一個精明的商人，一個感傷念舊的情人，一個但求安度晚年的老人。但他也很殘酷， 他拋棄了初戀，令她投河自盡。 他還折磨他現任的年輕妻子，將她軟禁在樓上，並強迫她每天服用精神藥物。

終於，在一個雷雨交加的夜晚，所有的家族醜聞和身世秘密都被曝光，這個禮儀的“象牙之塔”轟然倒塌。

 Zhou Manor is haunted recently. Legend has it that many years ago, a maid threw herself into a river, and her ghost often cried and sighed at night.

That night, the servant Lu Gui was drunk while his master was out. When he went back to his room through the garden, he saw two ghosts...

序幕

周公館最近鬧鬼。 相傳多年前，一位女僕投河自盡，她的鬼魂常在夜間哭泣嘆息。這一夜，僕人魯貴趁著主人不在喝醉了。 當他穿過花園走回自己的住所時，他看到了兩個鬼…

 Few years ago

Zhou Mansion is a large house in a city in southern China,  Zhou Pu Yuan who is the owner of a mining company，he with his family living in that house.

On this day, the servants are working in the kitchen, and the butler brings a message that the eldest young master will return from studying in the UK.

幾年前

周公館是中國南方某城市的一棟大房子，周朴元是一家礦業公司的老闆，他和家人住在那裡。這一天，傭人們在廚房工作，管家帶來一個消息，大少爺將從英國留學歸來。

The eldest young master of the Zhou family,  Zhou Ping has returned from studying in the UK. He has grown up from a teenager and has received some Western education and he is hospitable to new ideas.

When he returned to home again, he felt here it is still like a grave.

周家大少爺周萍，從英國留學回來了，他從一個少年已經長大了，他接受了西方教育，並接受了一些新思想的影響。他回來這個家，感到這裏像墳墓一樣透不過氣來。

 Fan Yi and Zhou Ping went to the garden to relieve their boredom at the same time, and they met unexpectedly.

They are dissatisfied with the oppressive life, they all yearn for a free way of life, free love. And they are of the same age, although they are stepmother and son,

Therefore, they crossed the line... and had an "incestuous" relationship.

繁漪和周萍同時去花園散心，他們不期而遇。 他們對身處的生活和環境感到壓抑，都嚮往自由的愛情和生活方式，而且他們年紀相仿，雖然是繼母和繼子。他們越界了…

 Lu Gui brought his daughter Si Feng to work in Zhou Manor. Zhou Ping met Si Feng and was immediately attracted to this young, pure and beautiful maiden, he felt she was like a cool rain in this sultry weather.

魯貴帶著女兒四鳳到周公館做工。 周萍見到了四鳳，並立刻被這個年輕、純潔、美麗的少女所吸引，他覺得四鳳就像這悶熱的天氣裡一陣清涼的雨。

 Si Feng felt Zhou Ping's enthusiasm, and she secretly liked this well-informed man. Zhou Ping came to Si Feng's house, and they confided their love to each other, on this night

四鳳感受到了周萍的熱情，她也暗暗喜歡這個見多識廣的男人。周萍來到四鳳家，兩人互相傾訴愛意在這一晚。

Lu Gui and Si Feng were talking in the kitchen. He recounted his last encounter with a ghost, and told Si Feng that the two ghosts were actually Fan Yi and Zhou Ping. Sifeng didn’t believe it.

魯貴和四鳳在廚房談話，他講述了上次遇鬼的經歷，並告訴四鳳那兩個鬼，其實是繁漪和周萍，四鳳不相信

 Zhou Chong told Fan Yi that he fell in love with Si Feng and proposed to her, but Si Feng refused because she had another person in her heart, and Fan Yi began to suspect that this person in Si Feng's heart was Zhou Ping. She asked the Butler to resign Lu Gui and Si Feng.

周沖告訴繁漪，他愛上了四鳳並向她求婚，但四鳳拒絕了，因為她心裡有另外一個人。繁漪開始懷疑四鳳心中的那個人就是周萍， 她讓管家辭掉魯貴和四鳳。

Zhou Pu Yuan forced Fan Yi to take medicine, but Fan Yi was unwilling to take it. Zhou Pu Yuan asked Zhou Ping to take medicine for Fan Yi to eat. Zhou Ping was terrified, thinking that his father knew about their scandal and was determined to get out.

He told his father that he wanted to go to the mines and suppress the strikes of the miners.

Si Feng was already pregnant and asked Zhou Ping to take her with him. Zhou Ping was eager to escape all the troubles he had caused. He pretends that he needs to go first and then comes back to pick her up.

Si Feng is aware that she may have been abandoned, but she still has some illusions.

She said, "I am willing to endure all hardships as long as the young master does not change his mind.”

周朴園強迫繁漪吃藥，繁漪不願意吃，周朴園讓周萍拿藥給繁漪吃，周萍嚇壞了，以為父親知道了他們的醜聞，決定要脫身。他告訴父親，想到礦上去，鎮壓礦工們罷工。

Si Feng was already pregnant and asked Zhou Ping to take her with him. Zhou Ping was eager to escape all the troubles he had caused. He pretends that he needs to go first and then comes back to pick her up.

Si Feng is aware that she may have been abandoned, but she still has some illusions. She said, "I am willing to endure all hardships as long as the young master does not change his mind.”

四鳳已經有了身孕，要求周萍帶她一起走，周萍急於逃離這裡所有自己惹下的麻煩。他假意說，要先去，然後再來接她。四鳳已經意識到自己可能被拋棄了，但是還存著一絲幻想。她說：只要大少爺不變心，我願意忍受一切苦難。

Fan Yi begs him to stay and tells him that he is his father's illegitimate child, and that his mother was abandoned by his father, and his mother committed suicide by throwing herself into the river。

周萍一心要脫身，擺脫自己惹下的所有麻煩事。繁漪哀求他留下來，並且告訴他，他是他父親的私生子，而他的親生母親，被他父親拋棄，已經投河自殺了。

Zhou Ping ruthlessly left, 

Lu Shi Ping was the woman who was abandoned by Zhou Pu Yuan and tried to committed suicide by throwing herself into the river. But she was rescued and later married Lu Gui, and had a daughter Si Feng.

When she came to visit her daughter at the Zhou residence, she met Zhou Puyuan, who recognised her and, from his story, learned about his other son, Lu Da Hai, the miner who led the strike.

Zhou Pu Yuan wanted to give her a sum of money to atone for his sins, but she didn't want his money, she just wanted to see her son Zhou Ping.

At this moment, Lu Da Hai barges in to negotiate with Zhou Puyuan, and Zhou Ping slaps him across the face. At last, she realises that her son, whom she misses day and night, is now just a cold-hearted stranger standing in opposition to her.

In despair, she wants to take Lu Da Hai and Si Feng with her and tries to leave the Zhou residence but is detained by Fan Yi.

魯侍萍就是當年被周朴園拋棄，並投河自盡的女人，不過她被救了，並嫁給了魯貴，並且有了女兒四鳳。

她到周公館來看望女兒，遇到周朴園，周朴園認出了她，從侍萍的講述，也知道了他的另一個兒子 魯大海，就是那個領導罷工的礦工。

周朴園想給她一筆錢彌補自己的罪過，侍萍不要他的錢，只是想見一見自己的兒子周萍。

正在這時，魯大海闖進來和周朴園談判，周萍打了魯大海一個耳光。侍萍終於意識到了，她日夜思念的兒子，現在只是一個冷酷的，站在她對立面的陌生人。

她絕望的帶著魯大海和四鳳想離開周公館，但是被繁漪扣留下來。

On the final night, a night of thunder and rain, everything is revealed. Zhou Ping and Si Feng are found to be brother and sister and that they are truly incestuous, but they didn’t know that this is their father's sin.

Unable to accept the truth, Si Feng runs into the rainstorm and sees a wire that had been blown by the wind and grabs it. Zhou Chong goes to save her but they are electrocuted to death.

Zhou Ping shoots himself and Zhou Pu Yuan shouted, "Retribution, retribution!" He fell to the ground suffering from a heart attack. The thunder was loud, and the rain was pouring...

在最後的那一夜，一個雷雨交加的夜，一切都被揭發暴露，周萍和四鳳是親兄妹，他們是真正的亂倫，不過他們不知道，這是他們父輩的罪惡。

四鳳接受不了真相，跑向暴雨中，看到一條被風吹斷的電線，她抓住了它，周沖去救四鳳，他們被電擊身亡. 周萍開槍自殺，周朴園高呼著“報應啊，報應啊！”心臟病發，倒在地上。雷聲大作，暴雨傾盆...
